Live Turtle Found in Traveler’s Pants by TSA at New Jersey Airport

A Transportation Security Administration officer at Newark Liberty International Airport found a live turtle concealed in the crotch of a traveler’s pants. The man from East Stroudsburg, Pa., was going through the security scanner when the turtle was detected. He pulled out a 5-inch red-eared slider turtle wrapped in a towel. The turtle was handed over to authorities and the man was not allowed to board his flight. Thomas Carter, the TSA’s federal security director for New Jersey, said it was the first time they had encountered someone concealing a live animal in their pants. The man’s motive for hiding the turtle in his pants remains unknown. The TSA did not disclose where he was flying to. The incident highlights the unusual ways people try to bypass airport security.
