Paralyzed Columbine survivor’s death officially classified as a homicide nearly three decades after school shooting

Nearly 26 years after the Columbine High School shooting, one of the wounded victims, Anne Marie Hochhalter, has passed away at the age of 43. Hochhalter was shot and paralyzed by Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris during the 1999 massacre, which left a total of 14 people dead including the shooters. Despite her injuries, Hochhalter dedicated her life to supporting other victims of mass shootings. She even reached out with forgiveness to Klebold’s mother, despite the pain she endured from the shooting and her mother’s subsequent suicide. The Columbine massacre brought national attention to the Denver suburb of Littleton and set a tragic template for future school shootings. Since Columbine, over 394,000 students have experienced gun violence at school. The tragic events of that day left a lasting impact on the nation’s consciousness, with images of heavily armed SWAT teams and students filing out with their hands up becoming iconic. The 13-page report released by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Hochhalter’s death was a result of the injuries sustained during the shooting, classifying it as a homicide. Despite the struggles she faced, Hochhalter was described as fiercely independent and a fighter by those who knew her. Her passing serves as a reminder of the lasting trauma and effects of gun violence on individuals and communities.
