Newsmax to pay $40 million to Smartmatic in settlement agreement

Newsmax agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million as part of a settlement last year in response to a defamation lawsuit. The deal included a cash payment and an option to purchase stock in Newsmax, with $20 million already paid and the rest due by July. Newsmax stated that the settlement would eliminate future legal expenses related to the suit. The lawsuit focused on false claims made by Newsmax about Smartmatic manipulating the 2020 presidential election. Smartmatic settled a similar lawsuit with One America News in April, while also pursuing legal action against Fox News. Fox News’ parent company, Fox Corp., settled with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million in 2023. The details of the payments by Newsmax provide insight into the confidential settlement agreement that was not publicly available initially. Smartmatic’s lawyer stated that they are focused on holding Fox News accountable for their actions surrounding the 2020 election, looking forward to presenting evidence in court. Newsmax did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the settlement.
