Airman Quinterius Chappelle has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait on Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. Sangrait’s badly decomposed body was found months after she disappeared, and Chappelle is accused of killing her on the base. It is unclear what the relationship between Chappelle and Sangrait was, and both the Air Force and Ellsworth Air Force Base did not respond to requests for comment. Chappelle, an active-duty airman stationed at the base, entered the service in 2019.
Sangrait, who was Native American, was last known to be staying with a friend in Eagle Butte before disappearing. She was reported missing in August, and her body was discovered in March. Chappelle is being held in the Pennington County Jail, with no bond set. The U.S. attorney’s office for South Dakota will prosecute the case.
The investigation involved local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the FBI, and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Anyone with information about Sangrait’s killing is asked to contact the FBI’s Rapid City office.
