Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander successfully completed its moon mission, conducting science experiments for NASA before losing power as the lunar night fell. The lander operated for five hours before going silent on Sunday evening, marking the end of its mission. Despite the loss of power, all 10 experiments conducted by the lander were successful.
Blue Ghost became the first private company to land on the moon without crashing, an achievement after several failed missions by other companies in recent years. Firefly confirmed that the lander observed a total lunar eclipse from the moon, adding to its list of accomplishments.
In contrast, another Texas company, Intuitive Machines, faced a setback when their lunar lander ended up sideways in a crater near the moon’s south pole, resulting in a failed mission. However, Firefly is already planning its next lunar lander mission, aiming for one moon landing per year.
The landing of Blue Ghost marks an important milestone in private space exploration, with only five countries having successfully landed on the moon. With the success of the mission, Firefly Aerospace aims to continue making advancements in lunar exploration in the future.
