TSA Recovers 2 Guns at Newark Airport Without Arresting Travelers

Two handguns were seized at Newark Airport over the weekend, according to officials. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) intercepted the guns during separate incidents on Saturday. One gun was found with a man from Mountain Lakes, NJ, who claimed he forgot he had the gun, which was loaded with four bullets. Later that same day, a man from Pearl River, NY, was stopped with a 9mm handgun loaded with six bullets. Both travelers had firearm permits, but the guns were not allowed through the checkpoint.

TSA officials remind travelers that guns can only be transported on a flight if they are unloaded, packed in a locked, hard-sided case, and declared to the airline. Failure to comply with regulations can result in a federal penalty of up to $15,000. Authorities have seized five guns at Newark Airport this year, with a total of 21 seized last year. TSA’s federal security director for New Jersey praised officers for their diligence and commitment to their mission.
