Jersey Shore Wave football team prepares for their first season: “A group of superhero women ready to take the field”

The Jersey Shore Wave, a women’s football team in New Jersey, is making waves in the sport by breaking barriers and setting new standards for women. The team, part of the Women’s National Football Conference, is a diverse group of athletes who play full-contact football. Team owner Dawn Sherman covers all costs for the 50-person team, with the goal of eventually being able to pay the athletes a living wage to play full-time.

The team will play its inaugural season at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey, adding to the historic venue’s legacy of breaking barriers. Mayor Andre Sayegh praised the team for getting involved with the community and demonstrating that women deserve their place on the field. Players come from various backgrounds and experience levels, with the team emphasizing that gender does not matter once they put on their pads.

The team’s first game is against the Chicago Wind, with hopes of riding the Wave all the way to a championship. Players like wide receiver Megan Stier, a former pageant girl, exemplify the team’s determination to challenge stereotypes and show that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated sports.
