Three Phoenix police officers will face 24-hour, unpaid suspensions and two of them will undergo additional training after the arrest of a deaf man with cerebral palsy last year. Tyron McAlpin was arrested in August 2024 after being mistakenly identified by a man involved in a fight at a convenience store. Video of the arrest shows McAlpin being punched and shocked with a stun gun almost immediately after police arrived on the scene. Charges of felony aggravated assault and resisting arrest were later dismissed by the Maricopa County Attorney after reviewing the case.
Following an administrative investigation, the Phoenix Police Department identified policy violations and issued the suspensions and additional training requirements for the officers involved. The incident occurred after a 911 call reporting a fight at a Circle K store, with the caller claiming a white man was the aggressor, leading police to mistakenly arrest McAlpin, who is Black. McAlpin’s attorney criticized the use of excessive force during the arrest and a lack of proper investigation by the officers.
The police department stated that their priority is the safety of the community and their officers, and they take the concerns raised by the incident seriously. The interim police chief expressed a desire to learn from the incident and move forward as a stronger department and community. The attorney for McAlpin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
