Alina Habba, President Donald Trump’s former defense attorney, has been sworn in as the new top federal prosecutor in New Jersey. Despite having no prosecutorial experience listed in her online biography, Habba was praised by Trump for her counsel and promised to work tirelessly to combat crime and corruption in the Garden State.
The ceremony took place in the Oval Office, with Attorney General Pam Bondi administering the oath as Trump observed. Trump credited Habba for her role in defending him in various civil lawsuits and her work as a spokesperson during his campaign. Habba’s appointment comes as violent crime rates in Camden hit a 55-year low, but other crime levels increased in Newark in 2024.
Habba’s legal career has primarily focused on state-level courts, with limited federal court experience. She represented Trump in a defamation case in 2024 and was fined nearly $1 million in 2023 for filing a lawsuit deemed bogus by a Florida judge. Habba has also represented reality TV star Siggy Flicker, among others, in legal matters.
Despite her lack of prosecutorial background, Habba’s appointment marks a new chapter in her career as she takes on the role of U.S. attorney in New Jersey. With Trump’s endorsement and confidence, she aims to restore law and order and “make New Jersey great again.” The move comes as a surprise to many in the legal community, given the usual background of U.S. attorneys with past prosecutorial experience.
