3 U.S. soldiers discovered deceased in Lithuania, with 1 soldier still unaccounted for following vehicle disappearance in peat bog.

Three U.S. Army soldiers who went missing in Lithuania during a training exercise have been found, and one soldier is still missing. The soldiers, all from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, were deployed to Lithuania in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve and stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Their armored vehicle became submerged in a peat bog during a mission to repair another vehicle. The soldiers’ identities have not been released pending family notification. Search and recovery operations are ongoing for the fourth soldier.

The vehicle was removed from the bog after a six-day effort that involved specialized equipment and assistance from Lithuanian armed forces and law enforcement. The U.S. Army and Lithuanian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, commanding general of the 3rd Inf. Div., expressed sorrow for the loss of the soldiers and emphasized the commitment to bringing everyone home.

Lithuania, a member of NATO since 2004, has hosted U.S. troops as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve following Russia’s seizure of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The U.S. Army and Lithuanian authorities are cooperating in the investigation. Updates on the search and recovery efforts will be provided as more information becomes available.
