Jersey government ministers freed from lift in new office building

Jersey’s Chief Minister, Lyndon Farnham, along with Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat and two office staff, found themselves trapped in a lift in the Government of Jersey’s new offices in St Helier. The group spent about 40 minutes stuck in the lift before being rescued by engineers. Farnham described the experience as the doors closing on the sixth floor with no movement.

Despite the inconvenience, Farnham noted that they made the most of the situation by preparing for an upcoming States meeting. He expressed gratitude towards the lift engineers for their prompt response in freeing them. Farnham attributed the incident to “teething problems” with the new government building, which had only opened in December on Union Street.

While everyone involved was unharmed, Farnham did not recommend the experience to anyone and emphasized the importance of ensuring such incidents do not occur in the future. The Chief Minister’s calm response to the situation and quick resolution by the engineering team showcased efficient crisis management. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper maintenance and testing in new buildings to avoid potential issues like being trapped in a malfunctioning lift.

Overall, the incident highlighted the need for thorough inspections and testing in new structures to prevent similar situations from happening in the future.
