Upcoming Museum Talks to Highlight Jersey City’s Legacy as Sports Mecca and Melting Pot

Local sports fans will have the opportunity to delve into the history of baseball in Jersey City and other recreational events at the Museum of Jersey City History on April 5. The program will feature Joe Colford, the grandson of the owner of the old Jersey City Skeeters, who will be recounting the city’s connections to baseball dating back to the 1860s, highlighting sporting arenas and legendary athletes and teams.

In addition to the baseball presentation, the museum will also be hosting a series of talks and exhibits focusing on the contributions of Filipino, Black, Puerto Rican, and Indian communities to Jersey City’s diverse population base. These events are supported by grants from the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development and the New Jersey State Historical Commission.

The program will kick off on April 10 with a talk on “The History of the Filipino Community in Jersey City” narrated by U.S. Navy veteran Nestor Palugod Enriquez. The museum will also unveil an exhibit on sports in Jersey City later in April.

Attendees can expect to hear about the rich history of sports in Jersey City, including the significance of Roosevelt Stadium, which was home to various teams and events throughout the years. The talks will be free and available both in person and via Zoom, with RSVPs encouraged on the museum’s website.
