Cory Booker begins lengthy Senate floor speech in opposition to Trump administration policies.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has been speaking on the Senate floor in protest of actions taken by the Trump administration, vowing to continue as long as he physically can. Booker began his speech at 7:00 p.m. ET on Monday and is addressing a variety of topics, including the harm inflicted by the president on Americans. Although not a filibuster, Booker’s speech is keeping the Senate floor open, with him warning of potential Medicaid cuts and drawing parallels to the late Senator John McCain’s health care vote. Booker’s emotional speech includes calls for action to address health care issues and criticism of the Republican Party’s agenda.

Throughout his speech, Booker took questions from colleagues and was able to take brief breaks. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Booker’s strength and conviction, with the Delaware Senator praying with Booker before he began his remarks. Booker’s marathon speech is not uncommon in the Senate, with previous examples such as Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz giving lengthy speeches on various issues in recent years. The record for the longest Senate speech is held by the late Strom Thurmond, who spoke for over 24 hours during his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
