NJ determines distribution of remaining pandemic relief funds

New Jersey is using millions of dollars in federal pandemic relief funding for various projects, including hospitals, affordable housing, schools, and sewer and stormwater projects. Additional funds are going to childcare services and maternal health. Governor Phil Murphy detailed these allocations in a report to the Legislature’s Joint Budget Oversight Committee, as required by state law. The allocations range from large-scale projects to smaller ones like community centers and libraries. The funding comes from New Jersey’s share of the nearly $2 trillion American Rescue Plan Act signed into law in 2021. The report covers over 90 individual appropriations, with a focus on healthcare, infrastructure, and public services. Funding is also allocated for projects like parks, libraries, and school improvements. The Murphy administration promises transparency in how the federal funds are spent, with a dedicated COVID-19 transparency website providing updates. While some funding decisions are made behind closed doors, the administration has defended the appropriation process, involving public hearings and stakeholder input. Republican lawmakers have questioned the distribution of funds, but New Jersey maintains control over the pandemic aid, with no indication of funds being pulled back.
