Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal-scoring record with his 894th career goal scored against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to his potential as a prolific offensive player. In addition to tying Gretzky’s record, Ovechkin holds several other scoring records, including most power-play goals and most goals scored for a single team. He has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for most goals in a season and is a three-time NHL MVP. Ovechkin led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. Despite not advancing past the first round of the playoffs since then, the Capitals are currently leading the Eastern Conference and are second in the NHL standings. Ovechkin, now 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and has a contract with Washington through the 2025-26 season.
