A New Jersey mother who drowned her two daughters for what she described as “religious purposes” was found not guilty by reason of insanity last week. Naomi Elkins, 27, murdered her two young daughters, ages 1 and 3, by drowning them in a bathtub at their home in Lakewood, New Jersey in June of last year. Despite admitting to the murders and claiming she did it for religious reasons, Elkins was deemed not guilty by means of insanity by Superior Court Judge Guy Ryan. She was ordered to serve two lifetime sentences in a secure psychiatric hospital.
Psychologists testified in court that Elkins was suffering from postpartum psychosis and believed that killing her children would rid the world of evil. Elkins, who also expressed disturbing beliefs about being a descendant of Hitler, will remain in the psychiatric institution for the rest of her life unless she is no longer considered a danger to herself or others. The tragic incident left her two children dead, and prosecutors did not dispute her determined insanity.
