Branchburg, New Jersey-based sports memorabilia company MeiGray recently authenticated the jersey worn by Alex Ovechkin when he scored his 895th goal, surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. The company’s President and COO, Barry Meisel, was there to authenticate the jersey as soon as it was passed to him. MeiGray has had a partnership with the Washington Capitals since the early 2000s and specializes in selling game-used equipment and jerseys from various teams. Although the authenticated Ovechkin jersey is not for sale, it will be returned to Ovechkin, who collects jerseys and plans to display them in a museum dedicated to his career achievements in Russia. The authentication process involved a thorough examination of the jersey, including matching it with photos from the game and identifying unique marks such as a thread coming off the number and a small mark next to the ‘L’ in Capitals. MeiGray recognized the historical significance of Ovechkin’s record-breaking moment and ensured the proper authentication and preservation of the jersey. Barry Meisel mentioned the possibility of the jersey becoming the centerpiece of an Alex Ovechkin museum in Russia, showcasing his remarkable career accomplishments.
