New Jersey Senator Andy Kim is set to receive an honorary doctorate from Rider University at the upcoming undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 17. The university made the announcement on April 7, sharing that Kim will also address the graduating class. Kim, a prominent figure in New Jersey politics for nearly a decade, has a strong connection with Rider, having visited the campus regularly, spoken to political science classes, and collaborated with Mercer County Meals on Wheels.
Director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics Micah Rasmussen praised Kim as a perfect choice for the honorary doctorate, citing the senator’s continuous interaction with the university. Rasmussen highlighted Kim’s previous visits to campus, including a lecture on campaign finances in 2024 and a listening session on mental health in 2023. Additionally, many Rider students have interned at Kim’s office.
Junior political science major Billy Malone expressed admiration for Kim’s dedication to Rider, noting that the senator had shown a particular interest in the university. Kim, who was elected as a senator last November, is the first Korean-American to be elected to the U.S. Senate and New Jersey’s first Asian American senator. Composer Rosephanye Powell, an alumna of Rider, will also receive an honorary doctorate during the graduate and doctoral ceremony for her contributions to choral music.
