New Jersey City University Leads the Way in Forming New Division III Conference with CUNYAC Institutions in 2027

New Jersey City University (NJCU) is set to become the first school outside of the New York City five borough footprint to join the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) in a newly-formed NCAA Division III conference. Starting in the 2027-28 academic year, NJCU will transition from the New Jersey Athletic Conference to the CUNYAC, beginning as an affiliate member in 2026-27.

NJCU, located in Jersey City, New Jersey, sponsors a total of 15 NCAA Division III sports and enrolls 4,200 undergraduates and 6,600 total students. The move to the CUNYAC will allow NJCU student-athletes to compete on a bigger stage in the New York City media market and provide access to shared resources, institutional partnerships, and valuable opportunities for professional development and networking.

The realignment signifies a strategic decision for NJCU, showcasing the talent of their students and athletic staff while advancing the university’s mission. This move is seen as a bold step forward that will strengthen the university’s athletic future and position them for their next chapter of success.
