New Jersey residents are feeling the pressure as the deadline to obtain a Real ID approaches on May 7. Mark Williams and his wife Mary Cohen-Williams are among those struggling to secure appointments at the MVC to get their Real IDs. Despite being sent from one place to another, they were unable to obtain the necessary documentation.
For those who are facing similar challenges, getting a Passport Card may be a viable alternative. The card, which serves as proof of U.S. citizenship, is valid for 10 years and can be used for both domestic and international travel. It can also be used for entry into federal buildings.
Applying for a Passport Card can be done online or at a local government office. The process requires an original birth certificate or naturalization certificate, a driver’s license, and a fee of $65 for adults and $50 for children under 16. Normal processing takes four to six weeks, while expedited service can take two to three weeks for an additional fee of $60. The TSA accepts Passport Cards for domestic flights and land and sea entry from certain countries.
