Daulton Varsho showcased his impressive defensive skills upon returning to the Toronto Blue Jays’ outfield after being activated from the injured list. In his season debut during a game against the Boston Red Sox, Varsho made a highlight-reel catch while chasing a deep fly ball hit by Jarren Duran in the fourth inning. Despite losing his balance and falling at the wall, he managed to regain composure and captured the ball with his glove while on one knee, turning away from home plate. Varsho expressed surprise at the moment, stating he instinctively extended his glove after falling.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider was initially concerned that Varsho’s fall might have hurt his surgically repaired right shoulder from last September, but Varsho confirmed he felt fine post-catch. Boston player Alex Bregman praised Varsho’s remarkable play, calling it one of the best catches he had ever seen, despite wishing for a different outcome for his teammate Duran.
Varsho, who won a Gold Glove award last season with a batting average of .214 and 18 home runs, has a career average of .225 and 79 homers over five seasons. His return follows recovery from surgery that delayed the start of his season.
In other team news, the Blue Jays activated pitcher Casey Lawrence after claiming him off waivers from Seattle, while optioning Paxton Schultz and Will Wagner to Triple-A Buffalo. Meanwhile, three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer continued to work on his return from thumb inflammation, having thrown off the mound for the second time.
