New Jersey DEP Faces Budget Cuts Amid Growing Needs

New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is set to face a significant budget cut, despite escalating demands on the agency. Commissioner Shawn LaTourette revealed to lawmakers that Governor Phil Murphy’s budget proposal allocates $1.81 billion to the DEP, marking a 12.5% reduction from the previous year. As state lawmakers review the budget ahead of the July 1 deadline, concerns are growing. Murphy’s broader fiscal plan includes a record $58 billion budget, which necessitates over $1 billion in tax increases to fund various initiatives.

While the budget received bipartisan support for adding $1 million for the Forest Fire Service, it drew criticism for proposed land use regulations in flood-prone areas and electric vehicle incentives. Senator Michael Testa (R-Cumberland) voiced concerns about the projected financial impacts on housing developments due to stricter regulations. LaTourette defended the regulations against claims of misinformation, emphasizing the necessity of addressing PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the state’s water supply, with estimated removal costs projected at $1 billion.

With environmental challenges mounting, the future of DEP’s funding remains a contentious issue in New Jersey’s budget discussions.
