Danielle McCartan Takes the Helm of Indian Hills Flag Football
Indian Hills High School is buzzing with excitement this season as Danielle McCartan, a prominent weekend host at WFAN sports-radio in New York City, steps into the role of head coach for the girls’ flag football team. Known for her insights on major leagues, McCartan’s transition to coaching marks a new chapter in her sports career, coinciding with the growing popularity of flag football in New Jersey.
Boasting over 120 teams, flag football is set to become a fully sanctioned varsity sport by 2027. McCartan is embracing the challenge, showcasing her passion for the game while working diligently to help her team grasp the strategies and fundamentals. “It’s an exciting time and a career shift for me,” she stated, expressing her eagerness to develop the players’ skills.
McCartan’s journey began when she learned about the coaching opportunity from Indian Hills’ girls basketball coach, Julie Haledjian Buccino. Despite having sought coaching positions since flag football’s inception, this year, she finally has her chance to lead. With experience as an assistant coach in volleyball and softball, she’s now focused on installing offensive and defensive strategies for her new team.
Her commitment is palpable; she engages in meticulous preparation, often found analyzing play formations during teaching breaks. Colleagues have even likened her to the legendary John Madden in her dedication.
McCartan’s coaching resonates with the players, who have expressed appreciation for her efforts. As the season unfolds, she aims to expand the game’s recognition by organizing a flag football camp this summer, intending to elevate interest in this emerging sport. McCartan emphasizes, “It’s an opportunity I’m not taking for granted,” as she drives forward the growth of flag football in New Jersey.
