EGG HARBOR CITY, N.J. (AP) — In a spirited appeal for political activism, New Jersey Senator Andy Kim addressed a packed town hall on Thursday, urging constituents to engage in the political process to counter President Donald Trump’s policies. His visit marked the beginning of a three-day tour through Republican-held House districts, set against the historical backdrop of Trump’s former casino empire in Atlantic City.
“Please stay engaged… help me build the kind of movement we need,” Kim implored attendees during a session at a Teamsters union hall that lasted nearly two hours. His message comes as Democrats, struggling for direction while out of power, seek effective strategies against swift policy changes from the Trump administration. Concurrently, the Republican House Speaker suggested his members avoid town halls following a wave of protests, although some GOP representatives continue to meet with constituents.
Many participants voiced their frustrations about potential cuts to government agencies, particularly Medicaid. Emotional testimonies highlighted personal stakes, like that of Susan Coll-Guedes, who expressed fears for her son with Down syndrome’s future care. Kim comforted her, emphasizing the reality of social services in the lives of those in need.
Attendees also called for a more assertive Democratic response to Trump, with some criticism directed at figures like Elon Musk. Kim responded by referencing legal challenges to the administration and critiqued the erosion of traditional checks and balances, stating that current behavior undermines foundational norms.
While the atmosphere was largely critical of the administration, a pro-Trump supporter questioned Kim’s lack of applause during a recent presidential address. Kim explained that he only clapped for a boy with cancer, characterizing the president’s overall tone as disrespectful.
Despite space limitations at the event, with around 150 attendees and many more outside, Kim’s town hall highlighted the urgent need for political engagement and unity among constituents in challenging times.
