Second Individual Charged with Arson in Pine Barrens Fire in New Jersey

Press Release: Two Charged with Arson in New Jersey Wildfire

A second individual has been charged in connection with the massive wildfire in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, now classified as the state’s second-largest fire in nearly two decades. Authorities announced on Friday that a 17-year-old juvenile has been arrested on charges of arson, aggravated arson, and hindering apprehension. His identity remains confidential due to his age.

The fire, which has been raging for nearly two weeks, is currently 80% contained and has scorched an area of 24 square miles in Ocean County. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Last week, 19-year-old Joseph Kling of Waretown was also charged with arson. Prosecutors allege that Kling set wooden pallets ablaze using gasoline and then abandoned the site.

During a recent detention hearing, Kling’s attorney claimed that his client did not intend to ignite the wildfire or damage any property. The Pine Barrens, characterized by its sandy soil and flammable vegetation, faces challenging firefighting conditions due to low humidity levels and the lingering effects of a lengthy drought. Firefighters continue to battle the blaze amidst these hardships.

The public remains urged to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
