USS New Jersey Undergoes Historic Drydocking Repairs
PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a remarkable return to its roots, the USS New Jersey (BB-62), the most decorated battleship in American history, was recently captured in breathtaking Google Earth images while resting in Drydock Number Three at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. This historic journey, which began on March 21, 2024, marked the first time the Iowa-class battleship was towed from its museum home in Camden, New Jersey, in over 30 years for essential repairs.
The $10 million drydocking project involved critical tasks including repainting the hull, replacing 1,200 anodes for corrosion protection, and fixing 160 through-hull openings. Despite challenges in financing and logistics, the operation drew thousands of visitors eager to witness the historically significant event.
The USS New Jersey, launched on December 7, 1942, boasted an unmatched service record, earning 19 battle stars during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and later conflicts. This restoration effort, partially funded by a state grant and public donations, reaffirms the importance of preserving naval heritage. After completion on June 20, 2024, the battleship returned to Camden, ensuring that future generations can appreciate its storied legacy.
