Firefighters Contend with Arson-Linked Wildfire in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens
Ocean County, NJ — A significant wildfire in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens has escalated to the state’s second-largest fire in nearly two decades, prompting the arrest of a second suspect in connection with the blaze. The fire, which has been burning for almost two weeks, is currently 80% contained and has consumed 24 square miles (62 square kilometers) of land, but fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
On Friday, prosecutors announced the arrest of a 17-year-old juvenile charged with arson, aggravated arson, and hindering apprehension. His identity remains confidential due to his age. This follows the earlier arrest of 19-year-old Joseph Kling from Waretown, who allegedly ignited wooden pallets with gasoline, contributing to the blaze.
Kling’s attorney argued that he had no intention of starting the wildfire or causing property damage. The region’s dense woodlands, paired with low humidity and the lingering effects of a drought, have heightened fire risks in the area, complicating firefighting efforts. Fire crews continue to tackle the challenging conditions as they work to fully contain the fire.
