Israel Approves Strategy to Intensify Military Action in Gaza

Israel’s security cabinet approved plans to intensify its military offensive in the Gaza Strip on Monday, as the Israeli military commenced the mobilization of tens of thousands of reserve soldiers. This decision comes in the context of increasing hostilities, highlighted by a missile attack from Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Israel’s main international airport, Ben Gurion, just hours before a pivotal security meeting led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The offensive aims to apply greater pressure on Hamas to secure the return of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks. Israeli army chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir emphasized the goal of defeating Hamas and stated plans to operate in new territories, targeting both above and below-ground infrastructure. Israel’s ongoing military response is part of a broader strategy following the severe escalation noted since the onset of the conflict.

Inside Gaza, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with the region enduring its longest blockade of aid since the conflict began. Israel has implemented a comprehensive ban on the entry of all goods, including essential supplies like food, fuel, and medical resources, now extending into its third month. Reports indicate that over 51,000 people have died in Gaza since the offensive was initiated, with a significant number being women and children, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. In contrast, Israeli counts report approximately 1,200 fatalities and about 250 hostages taken during the initial attacks by Hamas in southern Israel.

This cycle of violence marks a significant escalation in a protracted conflict, raising further concerns over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the broader implications for regional security.
