Philadelphia police are investigating an antisemitic incident involving a Temple University student at the Barstool Sports bar on Saturday night. A viral video shows a woman, believed to be a server at Barstool Sansom Street, holding a sign with an anti-Jewish message while a man repeats it. In response, Temple University announced the identification and interim suspension of the student involved, emphasizing their zero-tolerance stance against antisemitism. University President John Fry condemned the incident, asserting that acts of hate and discrimination are unacceptable at the institution.
Barstool founder Dave Portnoy reacted strongly on social media, describing himself as deeply angered, and even stated he would “ruin” those responsible. He later called for a more constructive approach, suggesting that the situation could serve as a teaching moment. Portnoy confirmed that two bottle service workers involved have been fired and stated that he had communicated with those responsible. He proposed sending them on an educational visit to Auschwitz, aiming for them to learn about the gravity of their actions. Portnoy hoped this would encourage them—and others—to think more critically before using hurtful language.
Both Temple University and Barstool Sports are continuing their investigations, with the university indicating that further disciplinary measures may be taken against other involved students. The overarching goal is to address and educate about antisemitism, transforming a harmful incident into a chance for reflection and understanding.
