Florida Man and His Dog Fatality Believed to Be Due to Bear Attack

Authorities are investigating a suspected bear attack in Florida that resulted in the deaths of 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog. Their bodies were found at Markel’s home in Jerome, Collier County, after officials received a call shortly after 7 a.m. The two were located a few hundred yards apart, indicating that the attack may have occurred at different times. George Reynaud, spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), confirmed the attack was from a bear, though it remains unclear if it involved one or multiple bears.

The incident took place near the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area, known for its wildlife activity. Following the discovery, law enforcement established a perimeter and deployed drones to locate the responsible bear(s). Additionally, bear traps were set up in the area. DNA evidence collected at the scene is expected to provide further insights into the incident.

The FWC indicated that the bear involved is likely a Florida black bear, which is the only bear species native to the state. The FWC estimates that approximately 4,050 Florida black bears reside in the region. As the investigation continues, wildlife officials are focused on ensuring public safety and understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic attack.
