Press Article: Widow’s Deception at NJ Animal Hospital
TOWOTA, NJ – A local widow, Alia Muslih, is facing significant legal consequences after operating the Totowa Animal Hospital with unlicensed veterinarians following the death of her husband, a well-regarded vet. Muslih, 43, pleaded guilty in Superior Court to multiple charges, including impersonation and animal cruelty, stemming from her actions during a six-month period in 2021 after her husband, Adel Hamdan, passed away from COVID-19.
Despite lacking qualified staff, Muslih allowed two New York men to pose as veterinarians. The facility was ultimately shut down after an investigation was prompted by the death of a dog during what was supposed to be a routine spay surgery. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the hospital was operating illegally, with no licensed veterinarians present.
Muslih’s sentencing in June could result in up to five years of probation, and she is mandated to pay restitution totaling $422,666.75 to the victims affected by her fraudulent operations. Meanwhile, the state Board of Veterinary Medicine clarified that the hospital had lost its license by August 2021.
