Countdown to New Jersey’s Governor’s Race: Five Weeks to Primary Election

As New Jersey gears up for its pivotal governor’s race, voters are reminded that the primary election is just five weeks away, scheduled for June 10. This election is crucial, as it will determine candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties who will contend in the November election to succeed the term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. Mail-in ballots are already being returned, marking an active start to the electoral process.

In the coming days, key debates will further energize the race. The Republican debate is set for Wednesday, while the Democrats will face off on Monday, May 12. These events will be aired live on NJ PBS and its YouTube channel, providing voters an opportunity to engage directly with the candidates.

The Republican lineup for Wednesday includes state Sen. Jon Bramnick, former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, and former radio host Bill Spadea. Notably, candidates Justin Barbera and Mario Kranjac did not qualify, failing to raise the $580,000 required under state campaign finance laws.

On the Democratic side, the contenders—Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, U.S. Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Mikie Sherrill, and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney—are positioned to make their cases to voters. Sean Spiller, the New Jersey Education Association President, did not make the cut due to insufficient fundraising, despite backing from union ads.

To keep the public informed, the “What Makes Jersey Run” newsletter will be providing special editions analyzing the debates and their implications. Stay tuned for insightful commentary in the exciting lead-up to primary day.
