Press Release: New Jersey Devils Players Face Sexual Assault Charges
Two New Jersey Devils players, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote, have surrendered to London, Ontario police amid serious sexual assault allegations stemming from a June 2018 incident involving the gold medal-winning Canadian World Junior team. London Police Chief Thai Truong confirmed the surrender in a Monday press conference, revealing that McLeod faces two charges, while Foote and three other players—Carter Hart, Dillon Dubé, and Alex Formenton—face one count each.
Details indicate McLeod’s additional charge relates to aiding in the offense. As of Sunday, both players had their lockers cleared from the Devils’ facility, and team representatives, including Coach Lindy Ruff, declined to comment further on the situation.
The incident occurred following a Hockey Canada gala, and the investigation was prompted by revelations in 2022 regarding a settled lawsuit filed by a woman alleging sexual assault against eight members of the team. Lawyers for the accused have publicly affirmed their clients’ innocence. McLeod’s legal team emphasized that they will rigorously defend their client, asserting that he denies any wrongdoing and requesting privacy for his family. Similarly, Foote’s attorney highlighted the importance of presumption of innocence and the right to a fair trial.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman indicated that it would be “surprising” for any of the implicated players to return to the league before the legal proceedings conclude. All five players are currently classified as free agents, with their contracts likely expiring after the 2023-24 season. The case highlights the ongoing scrutiny of professional sports organizations and the complexities surrounding allegations of misconduct.
Further hearings are scheduled for April 30.
