New Pope Leo XIV’s Stance on LGBTQ+ Inclusion Sparks Hope
In light of the recent elevation of Pope Leo XIV, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups express cautious optimism about potential changes in the Catholic Church’s approach to LGBTQ+ issues. William DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, stated, “We pray that over these 13 years, particularly under Pope Francis, Cardinal Prevost’s views have evolved regarding LGBTQ+ matters.”
Cardinal Prevost previously highlighted the influence of Western media in shaping public perceptions of LGBTQ+ lifestyles, likening them to gospel teachings. Despite acknowledging Pope Francis’ call for a more inclusive church, Prevost emphasized that doctrinal beliefs remain unchanged, underscoring that his focus would be on welcoming all individuals.
In his inaugural address, Pope Leo spoke of building bridges and extending God’s love to everyone, furthering the narrative of inclusion. Rev. James Martin, who has established an LGBTQ+ outreach ministry, praised the new pope’s humility and experience, remarking on the potential for a genuine and respectful dialogue.
However, the core doctrines of the Church, which still reject same-sex marriage and label sexual relations between same-sex partners as “intrinsically disordered,” remain intact. GLAAD has urged the new pontiff to continue the progress initiated by his predecessor, emphasizing the opportunity to inspire greater compassion and acceptance within the Church.
