Two Bergen County Stars Chase Milestones in Final Baseball Season
RAMAPO, NJ – As the Bergen County baseball season reaches its climax, Ramapo’s Charlie Wingfield and Rutherford’s Chris Gioia are making headlines and history. Both athletes, known for their prowess on the baseball diamond and beyond, have achieved standout milestones: each has surpassed 200 career strikeouts and is nearing 100 career hits.
On May 7, the two faced off for the first time in their athletic careers during the Bergen County Tournament. Gioia, pitching for Rutherford, struck out six batters in 6.1 innings, while Wingfield added a key go-ahead run for Ramapo, helping secure a dramatic 4-3 win.
“We’ve never played against each other in any sport, so it was surreal,” said Gioia. “In the moment, it was all about competition. After the game, it was all love and respect for him.” Wingfield echoed this sentiment, highlighting the honor of sharing the field with a fellow elite athlete.
Wingfield is headed to Wake Forest to play Division 1 football as a tight end, while Gioia will play as a wide receiver at Marist. Both athletes attribute their success to a foundation built through years of dedication in multiple sports, including basketball and football.
Coaches have praised their competitive spirit and versatility, describing Wingfield’s pitching as strategic, featuring a clever mix of pitches, and Gioia’s relentless approach as a “bulldog” mentality.
With the regular season winding down, both players are focused on their upcoming collegiate careers, all while cherishing these final moments on the diamond. Their remarkable journeys and achievements in high school sport continue to inspire future generations.
