Senator Bob Menendez Indicted in Alleged Bribery Scheme with Qatar
Federal prosecutors have updated their indictment against New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, alleging he has accepted gifts, including race car tickets, from the Gulf nation of Qatar as part of a yearslong corruption scheme. The revised charges were unveiled on Tuesday and indicate that Menendez’s illicit activities continued into 2023—extending the timeline of alleged wrongdoing beyond previous claims.
The indictment accuses Menendez of accepting payments from New Jersey real estate developer Fred Daibes in exchange for leveraging his influence to help Daibes secure millions from a Qatari investment fund. Additionally, Menendez is charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Egypt, allegedly aiding the nation in securing a monopoly on a Halal export business.
Menendez, along with his wife Nadine Menendez and other co-defendants, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney, Adam Fee, asserted that the government’s case is based on "baseless assumptions" relating to the senator’s routine interactions as a public official.
Prosecutors allege that Menendez helped facilitate an introduction between Daibes and members of the Qatari royal family, further showcasing his support for the Qatari government through public statements. Notably, after attending a Qatari-hosted event, Daibes allegedly offered Menendez luxury watches valued up to $23,990.
Records also show that following an FBI search of Menendez’s home, he attempted to cover up alleged bribes by repaying loans that had previously been masked as personal payments. Despite the burgeoning evidence, Menendez has maintained his innocence, arguing his actions were always in the best interests of the United States. The trial is expected to further explore these intricate allegations.
