UIL Approves Play-Calling Technology for 2025 Texas High School Football Season
In a groundbreaking move set to transform high school football in Texas, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has approved the use of wearable play-calling technology for the 2025 season. According to a report from TexasFootball.com, this wristband-like device allows coaches to communicate plays directly to players on the field, albeit with specific restrictions.
The UIL emphasized that this system does not permit audio communication via helmets; rather, it establishes a one-way text messaging format from coaches situated in the booth or press box to players on the field. This innovative approach aims to enhance play-calling while addressing recent concerns around sign stealing, which reportedly led to ejections during the UIL 2024 state championships.
Joe Martin, Executive Director of the Texas High School Coaches Association, noted that many coaches are eager to utilize this technology to safeguard their strategies during games. Coppel High School’s head coach Antonio Wiley expressed some uncertainty about adopting the technology, citing the lack of a spring practice period to integrate it effectively. "It might pose challenges for us since we haven’t utilized it in the spring," he mentioned.
GoRout, the Minnesota-based company behind the technology, welcomed the UIL’s decision. Chief Partnerships Officer Drew Robinson pointed out that Texas is at the forefront of innovation in football, setting a precedent for future developments in the sport.
As excitement builds for the 2025 season, fans are encouraged to stay updated with live scores and schedules through various sports apps, ensuring they won’t miss any action as Texas high school football embraces this new era of communication technology.
