Princeton Council Supports New Jersey Climate Superfund Act Amid Wildfire Crisis

Princeton, NJ – In a decisive move, the Princeton Council passed a resolution on Monday backing the New Jersey Climate Superfund Act, uniting with over 30 municipalities in a campaign to hold fossil fuel companies financially accountable for climate change-related expenses. This action comes at a pivotal time as New Jersey confronts one of its worst wildfire crises, underscoring the urgent need for legislation aimed at funding the Forest Fire Service and enhancing climate resilience efforts.

The proposed legislation (S3545/A4696) seeks to impose liability on major fossil fuel firms for climate damages, shifting the financial responsibility away from New Jersey taxpayers. Over recent years, natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, which resulted in $29 billion in damages and 38 fatalities, exemplify the escalating costs associated with climate change.

Under the Climate Superfund framework, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection would create a Cost Recovery Program to secure compensatory payments from polluters, which would be allocated for various climate adaptation projects statewide. Residents expressed gratitude for the Council’s support, highlighting the importance of initiating systemic change to combat climate-related challenges. The resolution was unanimously approved.
