Man Executed for 2000 Murder of Police Officer in Indiana’s Second Execution in 15 Years

Benjamin Ritchie, 45, was executed by lethal injection in Indiana on Tuesday, making it the state’s second execution in 15 years. Ritchie had been on death row since 2002 after being convicted for murdering Beech Grove Police Officer Bill Toney during a 2000 foot chase. Toney was the first officer from his department killed in the line of duty. The execution occurred after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Ritchie’s appeals, leaving him with no legal recourse.

Outside the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, a mix of both supporters and opponents of the death penalty gathered. Ritchie had his last meal from Olive Garden and shared messages of love and peace for his family. Under Indiana law, he could have five witnesses present, including his attorney, who reported observing Ritchie during his execution process.

Ritchie’s attorneys had long contested his death sentence, citing ineffective legal representation and arguing that his fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and childhood brain damage should have precluded him from the death penalty. They expressed regret over his execution, claiming he was no longer the same person as he was when the crime occurred. Advocates for disability rights echoed these sentiments, highlighting his mental health issues.

Despite these arguments, Indiana’s Attorney General defended the execution as a tribute to Toney’s sacrifice. The governor also denied Ritchie’s clemency request. Family members of Officer Toney expressed relief, stating it was a necessary closure to their story. In his final statements, Ritchie expressed deep remorse, acknowledging the irreversible consequences of his actions.

Ritchie’s execution is among several planned nationwide, with 12 scheduled in eight states this year.
