New Orleans Archdiocese Reaches $180 Million Settlement with Clergy Sexual Abuse Victims

The Archdiocese of New Orleans has reached a $179.2 million settlement for victims of clergy sexual abuse, aimed at compensating survivors as part of a lawsuit filed in 2020. The agreement, which includes contributions from the archdiocese, its parishes, and insurers, will be finalized after the church exits bankruptcy. However, many survivors and their lawyers have expressed dissatisfaction with the settlement, describing it as a “secret backroom deal” that most victims would reject. The attorneys, Soren Gisleson, Johnny Denenea, and Richard Trahant, criticized the archdiocese for perpetuating a cycle of abuse rather than seeking genuine accountability.

Aaron Hebert, a victim of priest abuse from the 1960s, labeled the deal as “an insult and a slap to the face,” arguing that it serves to prevent survivors from pursuing legal claims in state court. The settlement must be approved by both the survivors and the bankruptcy court, along with other creditors.

Despite the criticisms, the settlement proposal includes measures intended to protect against future abuse and support survivors, featuring a survivors’ bill of rights and reforms in how the archdiocese addresses abuse claims. Archbishop Gregory Aymond expressed gratitude for the effort towards healing for victims and the local church.

This case involves over 500 individuals alleging abuse, revealing a troubling history of clergy transfers and unreported crimes. In 2018, the archdiocese publicly acknowledged more than 50 clergy members who were removed due to credible abuse accusations, highlighting the extensive impact of the abuse scandal within the church.
