Trump Administration Sues NJ Cities Over Sanctuary Policies
TRENTON, N.J. — The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against four New Jersey cities—Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, and Hoboken—over their sanctuary city policies that limit police cooperation with federal immigration officials. Filed in federal court, the lawsuit seeks an injunction to stop these local governments from implementing such policies, asserting they obstruct federal enforcement efforts.
“While states and local governments can choose to stand aside, they cannot actively impede federal immigration work,” the lawsuit states. This legal action is part of a broader campaign against sanctuary cities, which also includes suits against Chicago, Denver, and others.
Sanctuary policies typically involve limited collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on civil enforcement matters, aiming to encourage community members to report crimes without fear of deportation.
Mayors from all four cities—Democrats—defended their policies, arguing they enhance public safety and foster community trust. Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka called the lawsuit “absurd,” while Paterson’s Andre Sayegh labeled it an “egregious attempt” at political posturing. Hoboken’s Ravi Bhalla vowed to vigorously defend the city’s right to its policies. The outcome of the case remains uncertain, especially following a related ruling by the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals supporting New Jersey’s Immigrant Trust Directive.
