I-80 Westbound Lanes in Wharton, N.J. to Reopen Tonight

Progress Made in Reopening I-80 in Wharton, NJ

WHARTON, NJ — After months of disruption, I-80 is set to reopen two westbound lanes on Friday night, offering much-needed relief to local drivers. The Morris County highway has been closed since February due to a significant sinkhole, an issue that has compounded following another large sinkhole last December.

Residents have expressed frustration as detours have flooded local roads, leading to daily gridlock. Wharton resident Carlos Ramseyer highlighted the chaos, sharing how he has had to adjust his schedule just to navigate local traffic. Similarly, Randolph resident Anthony Rotolo noted that even routine trips have become challenging.

Additionally, local businesses have felt the impact; Pop’s Bagel Shop reported a dramatic decline in customers during the closure. However, worker Yazan Muheisen expressed relief as business begins to recover with the reopening of two eastbound lanes last week.

While the reopening of westbound lanes adds further hope, residents remain cautiously optimistic, recalling delays in previous promises. Crews are committed to working around the clock, with the goal of fully reopening all lanes by the end of June.
