Historic Loew’s Jersey Theatre Set to Open Fall 2026 After $130 Million Renovation
Jersey City officials announced that the Loew’s Jersey Theatre, a landmark established in 1929, is poised to reopen in the fall of 2026 following a $130 million renovation. The project, managed by Phelps Construction Group and funded by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, aims to restore the theater’s historic charm while upgrading its facilities to modern standards.
The renovation cost has almost doubled from an initial $72 million due to delays and rising material prices. Improvements include reconstructed mezzanine lounges, upgraded HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, a modern sprinkler system, and the restoration of the iconic marquee. The seating capacity will be flexible, ranging from 2,500 to 4,000, allowing for a wider variety of events, including concerts and local productions.
Mayor Steven Fulop emphasized the project’s potential economic impact, predicting it will create 115 permanent jobs and invigorate the Journal Square area. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to arts and culture as a distinguishing factor in his gubernatorial campaign. Originally closing in 1986, the theater had small-scale reopenings in the early 2000s, but this renovation marks its largest revival to date.
