Tornado Watch Issued for New Jersey and Pennsylvania
A tornado watch has been issued for ten counties in central and southern New Jersey, along with parts of eastern Pennsylvania, due to potential tornadic activity anticipated Friday night. The watch, announced by the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center shortly before 5 p.m., covers Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, and Salem counties.
While a tornado watch indicates favorable conditions for the formation of rotating funnel clouds, it is not as urgent as a tornado warning. Residents are urged to remain vigilant as strong thunderstorms, capable of producing up to one inch of rain per hour, are expected to sweep across the region. This could lead to flash flooding, prompting a flood watch effective from 7 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday for several counties, including Burlington and Camden.
Forecasters have advised that there’s a slight chance of tornadoes touching down throughout Friday evening and into early Saturday, particularly in southern New Jersey. Should a tornado warning be issued, residents are advised to seek shelter immediately in sturdy buildings and avoid windows. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
