North Jersey – This weekend, six private gardens in North Jersey will be welcoming visitors as part of the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program, which encourages community exploration of local green spaces. Since its inception in 1995, the program has become a favorite for garden enthusiasts eager to discover hidden gems in their neighborhoods.
The featured gardens, open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 1, include five in Essex County and one in Bergen County. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for Garden Conservancy members. Guests must register online to participate.
Among the highlights is The Secret Garden @ 377 The Gotelli Garden at Harrison Park in East Orange, a stunning formal Italianate garden situated atop a parking garage. Conceived by William T. Gotelli, it boasts a diverse array of dwarf conifers, azaleas, hydrangeas, and lilacs amidst its one-acre expanse.
In Montclair, Evelyn’s Garden showcases a thriving landscape that has evolved from a dilapidated area into a lush retreat, while Anna’s Pollinator Haven serves as a sanctuary for wildlife, designed to attract monarch butterflies with native plants.
The Cottage features an amalgamation of age-old trees, colorful flowers, and a serene water feature, complemented by the homeowner’s studio, the Glass House. The Mountsier Garden in Nutley is an artistic enclave filled with humorous sculptures and a variety of plant life, all facilitated by renowned landscape designer Richard Hartlage.
Lastly, The Garden of Elaine H. in Oradell offers a glimpse into worldly adventures through its rock collection and perennial flora that have transformed the space since 1971.
