TRENTON, NJ — On Friday, NJ Advance Media announced the finalists for the prestigious high school sports awards, recognizing exceptional talent among New Jersey’s athletes in six categories—three for boys and three for girls. The categories include Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, and Breakthrough Athlete of the Year.

The winners, selected by NJ Advance Media staff, will be revealed during a live event on June 24th at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, NJ.

Among the notable nominees for Athlete of the Year are Benjie Shue of Bergen Catholic, who has excelled in football, wrestling, and track and field, and Nate Biehstock from Hillsborough, known for his prowess in ice hockey. Other male contenders include Kenny Barnicle (Mendham Swimming), Lotzeir Brooks (Millville Football), and Charlie Wingfield (Ramapo Football, Basketball, and Baseball).

The female nominees showcase an impressive array of talent, including Ella Poalillo from High Point in wrestling and Mia Pauldo of Morris Catholic, a standout in basketball. Emma McCarthy (Paul VI Soccer & Lacrosse), Addison Halpern (Rutgers Prep Soccer), and Gabriella Shadek (Immaculate Heart Ice Hockey & Softball) round out the list of elite female athletes.

In the Team of the Year category, nominees include Bergen Catholic Football, Christian Brothers Cross Country, St. Benedict’s Soccer, and Morris Catholic Basketball among others. The event promises to highlight the dedication and achievements of New Jersey’s high school athletes, celebrating their hard work and determination throughout the year.

The upcoming ceremony is set to be a thrilling occasion for sports enthusiasts, honoring the remarkable accomplishments and inspiring stories of young athletes across the state. Stay tuned for the award winners on June 24th!
