New Jersey Sheriff’s Officer Dies in Tragic Fall from Ninth Floor
Jersey City, NJ – A 29-year-old sheriff’s officer, Justin Rivera, tragically died after falling from a ninth-floor window of the Hudson County Administration Building on May 30. Authorities received reports of an injured officer at approximately 9:30 a.m. and found Rivera on the ground outside. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
A preliminary investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office suggested that the fall was accidental, as the building was closed to the public due to a power outage. Witnesses described hearing glass shatter before Rivera fell, with one stating, "I saw the officers perform CPR… and then just stop."
Rivera, a father and boxing coach, was remembered fondly by colleagues and friends who expressed their shock and sorrow over his passing. Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari noted Rivera’s dedication to law enforcement and affirmed that he was "more than a colleague" to the department.
As the investigation continues, grief counselors have been made available to support Rivera’s colleagues and family during this difficult time. A makeshift memorial has been established outside his family-owned martial arts studio, honoring his legacy as a beloved mentor and community member.
