Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a prominent Democratic contender for New Jersey governor, faces serious allegations of fostering a toxic work environment, particularly towards women. A recent Fox News Digital review highlights his connections with several individuals accused of abuse, raising concerns about his leadership.
Baraka, in office since 2014, appointed his brother Amiri Baraka Jr. as chief of staff. Sebrivious Scott, a former employee under a prisoner reentry program, accused Amiri Baraka of mishandling her reported sexual assault by a superior, allegedly telling her to "be happy you have a job" instead of addressing her complaints. Scott has since settled her claims but declined to discuss the terms.
The issues extend to another brother, Obalaji Jones, who faced allegations of sexual assault from former Newark employee Dannisha Clyburn. She claimed Jones assaulted her in 2013 and attempted to do so again in 2015. Despite her earlier support of Baraka, Clyburn urged him to remove Jones from his position, labeling him a "predator."
Former Newark Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins accused Baraka’s administration of widespread misconduct, claiming many women faced coercion for sexual favors in exchange for job security. Jenkins criticized Baraka for ignoring legislation that required the appointment of an independent task force to investigate such claims.
Additionally, Baraka has been linked to Kiburi Tucker, a convicted felon with a history of assault, who has publicly supported Baraka’s gubernatorial campaign.
City spokesman Mark Di Ionno dismissed the allegations as "fabricated" and politically motivated, coinciding with Baraka’s rising popularity. As controversy mounts, it remains to be seen how these revelations will impact his gubernatorial aspirations.
