NFL Reporter Dave Klein Passes Away at 85
Dave Klein, a distinguished NFL reporter and columnist who dedicated decades to covering the New York Giants at The Star-Ledger, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85. Klein’s career began in 1961 after he departed from pharmacy school, joining alongside his father, Willie, who was then the sports editor. His brother Moss joined the staff in 1972, further solidifying the family’s legacy in sports journalism.
Klein was known for his sharp wit and entertaining writing style, earning a reputation as a "major-league chop-buster." His combativeness and unabashed opinions made him a beloved figure among readers and colleagues alike. His combination of analysis and self-deprecating humor shone through in his weekly NFL picks column, which was a staple for readers each Sunday during football season.
Over his career, Klein chronicled the Giants’ first two Super Bowl victories, vividly capturing the exploits of legendary players like Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms. Giants Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells praised Klein for his extensive knowledge and connection to the team.
Klein was among just three sportswriters who attended all 54 Super Bowls from its inception, a streak he maintained until 2021. Remembering the inaugural game, Klein reflected on the humble beginnings of what has become a massive cultural event.
After leaving The Star-Ledger in 1996, he continued covering the Giants through a dedicated newsletter and authored 35 books, including notable works on NFL history.
Klein is survived by his wife, Carole, and family. Services will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at Bloomfield Cooper Funeral Home. The New York Giants expressed their condolences, honoring his commitment to covering the franchise and its fans.
