Suspect Arrested After 11 People Stabbed at Oregon Homeless Services Facility

On Sunday night, eleven individuals were hospitalized following a stabbing incident at the Union Gospel Mission, a homeless services provider in downtown Salem, Oregon. Police confirmed that the incident occurred around 7:15 PM and that a male suspect is now in custody. The victims were taken to Salem Hospital, though details about their injuries were not immediately available.

According to Craig Smith, the executive director of the mission, the suspect had just stayed overnight at the facility and was preparing to check in for a second night when a fight broke out. The attacker reportedly had a knife, which he used during the altercation. The incident took place moments before the suspect was to surrender his belongings to staff, including at least one employee who was injured in the attack.

The Union Gospel Mission, which opened its new facility in 2021, serves as a shelter and support center for the homeless, providing food and housing for about 150 people each night. The attack affected victims both inside and outside the mission’s premises. Smith indicated that security footage of the incident would help police in their investigation, and they are cooperating fully by sharing the video evidence.

The mission, founded by Christian businesspeople, is located just a few blocks away from its older facility and is across the street from the Salem Police Department. Law enforcement officials are expected to release additional details as the investigation proceeds.
